ARTIST STATEMENT

Transforming Space Through Light and Color by Ellen Hackl Fagan

My most recent studio space is becoming an ancient house on the Boston Post Road in Connecticut. The Pond Weed House was built in 1696, and remains standing on its original foundation. A survivor of real estate gluttony, it’s a crumbling beauty, just the thing an artist wants for space.

I will be restoring the Pond Weed House over the next two years or more with my son, architect Christopher Fagan. It will become a family home and area of retreat for artists to also pull from its creative vibe. It will also be ODETTA Gallery’s future home.

Artists have owned and worked in this space since its beginnings in the 17th century. Blacksmiths, art teachers, and puppet makers have all left their artifacts behind, evidence of the workshops they created here.

In its dormant phase, before restoration begins, I’ve been inviting artists, one by one, to do small interventions in light and color, or anything that moves them once there. We’re documenting these moments and posting on Instagram and the artists’ websites. It’s the beginnings of ODETTA’s new home. www.odettagallery.com and @pondweedhouse and @ehfaganstudio.

This series, Transforming Space Through Light and Color at the Pond Weed House, offers one a study in how color creates new space from its washes. One cannot touch this, it passes through our hands, like the ghosts of the artists who worked in this house over the nearly 330 years of its existence.

Transforming Space Through Light and Color are archival ink digital prints of photographs taken when the color and materials were in situ. Gone now, only to survive in the ephemeral world of photography, but I believe that the house knows and remembers as I find myself a part of this lineage that the Pond Weed House is offering me.
