BIOGRAPHY

John-Mark Schlink, b. 1966, is a Minnesota-based artist. He specializes in printmaking media, including intaglio, woodcut, screenprint and digital techniques. His work has been selected for numerous national and international juried and invitational exhibitions. Schlink’s prints have been included in recognized public collections across the US and abroad.

Schlink’s work in prints is strongly influenced by his life-long interest in modern architecture and architectural concepts. He translates modernist architectural forms and ideas through abstraction, creating imagery that defies specific identification of a particular place or building. These abstracted constructs (often translated from photographs of real-life buildings and construction sites he visits) remain as ambiguous place-spaces that oscillate between what he refers to as “built and unbuilt” states. These images represent his interests in the experiential and metaphorical aspects of building and built environments as well as the influence and effects of modernist aesthetics in a contemporary context.

John-Mark’s practice as a printmaker and professor of art also play a large part in his studio decisions. He cites the process and materials of printmaking as crucial to the development of his work and embraces experimental methods in order to discover potentialities within his various series of prints.
